The logic that building enduring pieces of infrastructure is useful is flawed?

If I'm drunk in a strip club at 3am and the bouncer tells me I'm under arrest I'm pretty unlikely to believe he's a cop. I'm not a Peterson or Vikings fan, but I hope this charge gets dropped.
|Question about the National Debt (16) | Posted on July 5, 2012, 2:09 p.m.|
|JIC- the reason borrowing at a low interest rate isn't a great burden is because you tend not to bother paying off the principle- you just borrow another billion dollars so you can pay back the principle on the first billion.|
This works fine up to a point. The two problems are that countries have a habit of borrowing even more and that once interest rates go up you start finding it hard to pay the interest. As interest rate hikes are often combined with stagnating economies (resulting in the double whammy of lower tax revenues and higher welfare costs) things can go pear shaped rather quickly.
Random example with fake but simple numbers; Greece may have borrowed $100 million in 2002 at 2% interest on a 10 year loan, needing to pay $2 million a year in interest. At the time they were bringing in $200 million a year in tax revenue and forking out $20 million in welfare payments.
In 2012 when they needed a new loan to pay of the original one, but interest rates to get the new $100 million had gone up to 6%- $6 million a year. Whilst tax revenues had dropped to $180 million and welfare payments had spiked to $30 million.

|It was a man made disaster in the same way that the flooding of New Orleans during and after Katrina was a man made disaster and the destruction of Port-au-Prince after the Haitian earthquake was a man made disaster.|
In all of these cases we knew of the potential for a catastrophe and failed to take adequate precautions to protect ourselves from the results of predictable natural events.
We can't prevent natural events, but we can prevent them destroying the stuff we build.

|I'm a big supporter of private health care alongside public. It takes a lot of pressure of the public system if rich people are paying for their own care. |
An example of it working well is gallstones. Here if you have insurance you get the operation within a matter of weeks of diagnosis. You go to a nice hospital where you get a private room with cable TV and can stay as long as you like. If you don't have insurance you go on a waiting list and get the exact same operation, you just have to wait 4-6 months and end up sharing a room with three other people and no TV for a couple of days. Which is fine, gallstones aren't going to kill you, they're just extremely painful. And having to put up with them for a few months discourages people from eating fatty food.
Canada literally allows abortions up to the moment of birth without any restrictions whatsoever, which is frankly repulsive beyond belief.
Oh please, killing it at two months or 8 months, what's the difference? You're still killing it.

Ortons film was probably never intended for a proper release. But I'm sure they were hoping to get The Chaperone and possibly Knucklehead into theatres but the distributors simply wouldn't take them.

|Holden is the Australian branding for GM. |
It's a V6 so it uses a lot of gas. My old 4 cylinder was much more economical. And it seems to have at least one $500 problem a year, which has been the case since I bought it brand new. Obviously for the first two years that was covered byt warranty, but taking it back to the dealer to have them fixed was still a pain.
Oh, and it's got stupid warning beeps that kick in if I don't put my seatbelt on within 5 seconds. Or drive with the boot open. Which I actually do quite a bit.
|What makes an expensive tire better then a cheap one? (7) | Posted on July 2, 2012, 9:48 p.m.|
Forgot to mention that obviously different brands of tires will be valued differently just because of the name. Yes, you will pay more for that set of Michelin tires. And make sure to compare tires of the same size. Too many variables come into play when comparing tires of different sizes including demand, availability, tire size itself (bigger tire = more rubber = more money).
I'm not a car guy. The only time my tires get changed is when the mechanic says they have to be. So I just get him to send it to a tire shop and sort it out for me.
And if anyone cares here's what I drive....
I hate it.
|What makes an expensive tire better then a cheap one? (6) | Posted on July 2, 2012, 9:45 p.m.|
|Tks. We don't use winter tires here.|
My mechanic forced me to buy a new spare tire once because it had a different grip to the four on my car. Six months later when I got my next service he replaced a balding tire with one with a different grip to the other three. When I pointed out it had a different grip he suggested I put the spare on the car and make the tyre with the different grip my spare.
Sadly I didn't have my knife with me so I let it slide and just changed mechanics.

|Pena Nieto pledged to continue that anti-drug offensive, but "with a new strategy to reduce violence and protect, above all, the lives of Mexicans." |
He promised there would be "no pact or truce" with drug cartels, but clearly some supporters expected the PRI to establish some sort of modus vivendi with the gangs, something was accused of doing in the past.
"He'll stabilize the cartels. He'll negotiate so they don't hurt innocents," Martha Trejo, 37, a PRI supporter from the Gulf coast city of Tampico, said at Sunday's victory rally.
The guys who let the cartels build their empires are back in power. The war is over. They're going to go back to the old status quo.
