|I have a hard time seeing how he's better than D-Will, who can do the same things plus score much more effectively. |
John Stockton is very much at the Steve Nash level of offensive efficiency. His career averages were .515/.384/.826, he lead the league in True Shooting percentage 3 times and has a career .608 mark there. And for whatever reason people seem to downplay his defense but he was a consistently elite defender, markedly better than what Williams is.
|NBA Topic IX: The Off-Season (344) | Posted on July 13, 2012, 2:06 p.m.|
|There's no way you can leave Pippen off the roster, none. Also I think you're overrating Stockton and underrating Williams, especially to say that Williams is worse than Westbrook.|
Pippen can be in the 11th/12th spots, but I don't think they really matter/are worthy of much discussion. Everybody in the top 10 can play 40 minutes
Stockton is way better than Williams, come on man. Way better shooter, way better playmaker and better defender too. The only arguments for Williams are that he can defend bigger players (not gonna happen on this lineup) and that he has experience as the go-to scorer (again, not ever gonna happen on this lineup). Plus this gives them Stockton + Malone.
|NBA Topic IX: The Off-Season (337) | Posted on July 13, 2012, 12:46 p.m.|
|Why would you take Williams? He's the third best PG on the current team and no way is he better than Stockton, either.|
For the rest, it depends on what you're going for. If you wanted to make a real FIBA oriented team you would probably have Anthony on it, and obviously the positions could be a very fluid thing. Bird was off his peak in '92 and Magic is basically impossible to evaluate.
I'd go with

|It would hurt them a lot as it is a stupid idea. The aforementioned Saturn launch was a complete disaster and was a big turning point for Sega as a home console manufacturer. Yeah, it would be different for individual games, but there is a reason why games like GTA get over a year of publicity leading up to it and GTA V is in an especially poor position for such a thing because we have seen just about nothing from it. If they wanted to sell people on the new features they will have ****ed up tremendously as you're trying to explain them post launch. Same deal with selling people on the graphics, the setting, etc. Marketing for it would be a nightmare, since you'd have to find some way to just bomb people with advertisements by an even greater factor than usual. You already mentioned the pre-orders, which is not just something to gloss over. It's a good idea not to piss off the leading retailer of video games, plus in general they're a useful thing to have since they're often used to predict the number of units of the game to ship. And these days you aren't making it through to the release date without your plan getting leaked.|
To me it would be a desperate idea, the kind of thing Acclaim would have done to promote BMX XXX or something like that. Doing it for one of the heavy hitters in the industry would be a gigantic, unnecessary risk.

|Hedo isn't an expiring, he has a player option which he is obviously going to use. |
Davis is bad defensively and extremely inefficient shooting wise (46.6% True Shooting percentage from a PF playing with Howard!). He is not a decent player by any means. He also has 3 more years left on his deal.
Both players also have questionable character if you care about that sort of thing.
|NBA Topic IX: The Off-Season (242) | Posted on July 9, 2012, 1:42 p.m.|
|That would be the worst deal of all time. They don't dump Hedo or Davis and actually take on some terrible contracts, they get useless picks and they have to pay up for Brook Lopez. Even given the circumstances they could do much better. I would much sooner take the Rockets deal or virtually anything else that has been offered. That is a pretty severe underpayment even for just 1 year of Dwight.

|We're paying him like some fringe guy so I don't really care. I highly doubt he becomes a top 2 line player. Trading Foligno for Methot was stupid as Methot is total ****. We are ridiculously short on forwards who can be expected to score, especially if Alfredsson doesn't come back.
|Toronto overpays Landry Fields in order to f*** with the Knicks getting Nash. (26) | Posted on July 3, 2012, 1:25 p.m.|
|By retaining Humphries I mean "keeping him until he's actually a worthwhile player". Yeah, trading a total bust for an alright bench guy is decent by itself but it's hardly revolutionary, and selling on Kris at the wrong time is a strike against Bryan. T.J. Ford was a huge injury risk, shot mediocre percentages and was ineffective defensively. Garbajosa was a PF who shot 42% who wasn't a great rebounder or defender or anything. None of those players played more than 3 years here, none of them were traded for anything worthwhile, none of them peaked as better than ok starters. Every team has moves like that. Milwaukee drafted Ilyasova, Sessions and Mbah a Moute with 2nd rounders, so Colangelo is beaten handily by Larry Harris. |
Newsflash: You don't sign a guy from the D-League and have him turn in to LeBron. With the exception of Ford, we got all those guys for nothing and they all contributed.
This is true! This is because the D-League is awful and makes being a great scout of the D-League a fairly worthless skill. The same is also true of scouting the 28 year olds of Europe. It is also worth nothing that the last of those moves you mentioned occurred in 2007.
The phrase you used is diamond in the rough. I see no diamonds! If your best move in 6/7 years (where you have several high picks and lots of money to work with) is getting 3 years of Anthony Parker you are a thoroughly miserable GM.
|Toronto overpays Landry Fields in order to f*** with the Knicks getting Nash. (23) | Posted on July 3, 2012, noon|
|Trading Araujo for Humphries doesn't mean much if you don't retain him, TJ Ford wasn't really any good and we paid him a lot of money, Moon is barely an NBA player, Garbajosa isn't and Parker's crowning achievement was being vaguely decent in his first 2 years here. We are really stretching the meaning of 'diamond in the rough' if any of those count, those are the kinds of things that every NBA team gets and add pretty well no value and if you go by our drafting he shouldn't have any business being a head scout. I mean, Rob Babcock picking up Calderon could legitimately be a better move than all of those combined.
|Toronto overpays Landry Fields in order to f*** with the Knicks getting Nash. (17) | Posted on July 3, 2012, 11:31 a.m.|
|If Colangelo hasn't been fired yet than I'm not sure what else he can do|
His good decisions have been drafting Jonas, so basically drafting a guy around where he was projected and it looking like a solid if unspectacular draft pick
His bad decisions have been everything else
I really have no idea why there is any praise for him, he is easily a much worse GM than Burke and is in the bottom tier in the NBA

|No/few blacks in the 1500m...why? (2) | Posted on July 2, 2012, 3:18 a.m.|
|Bernard Lagat is one of the favourites and he's black, and 7 of the last 8 best annual times were put up by black people (all from Kenya). But:|
1) Genetically, the big advantage in the marathon doesn't really just go to black people, it goes mainly to the Kalenjin people of Kenya who are an ethnic minority of a few million, and the top guys in the marathon are almost all Kenyans and Ethiopians, so not black guys from the USA, England, France, Nigeria, the Congo, etc. There were a bunch of studies on the Kalenjins where even the average schoolboy would out-perform top runners from the rest of the world given 3 months of training. The advantage goes down the shorter the distance and 1500m is middle distance.
2) There's also the popularity of it. Like with the short distance stuff, Jamaicans actually support it well but longer distance stuff ranks just slightly above be archery to them, in America there's a huge gap in the prestige of the 100m stuff to the 800m/1500m, and in Kenya and Ethiopia there is a lot more emphasis on the marathon then there is on 1500m (even though they still do incredibly well in it).
