From: NewMoonShadow | #013Yeah, perhaps they could give them the ability to deploy drones that absorb ranged shorts, or let them fire heat-seeking missiles. Those would be so useful.
Then you tell me what "Self-defense ability" means if not "an ability with which to defend oneself", which is exactly what the Seeker Missiles and Defense Drones are.

This. Scans are all well and good but it seems like a Terran who's facing legions of cloaked enemies going every which way at all times will invest in a Raven or two.

|From a Gameplay perspective SC II is so far above SC 1 that it's not even a comparison. SC 1 consisted of a bunch of skermishes with AI opponents and a handful of half-baked adventure missions mixed in. SC II had a wide variety of missions with a sweeping range of objkectives whose only downside was that you only got to play as Terran (except for a few Protoss missions). I really thought the upgrade system made up for this though.

|I think the problem with "Standard Play" VS "Cheese" is that... when you know your opponent is going to go standard, and you "cheese" to counter it, is it really still cheese or are you just countering his play? I mean you're a lower level Terran going against a Protoss, why would he expect you to do anything but Marine/Marauder?|
People seem to think that anything besides the "standard" is cheating, but when he successfully fakes you out and hard counters what you're doing, I think he just flat-out outsmarted you. Even if such a tactic wouldn't work as GrandMaster level against players who can multitask 15 things at once, that doesn't mean it's BAD or ineffective against people like you who apparently, y'know, can't do that.
And frankly sometimes the loss in overall reliability is compensated for by the element of surprise, which was exactly what defeated you.

The original BW campaign (and SC1 campaign in fact) was almost nothing but player VS computer skermishes with a few adventure-style levels mixed in. Every single mission in WoL (and presumably HotS) had entirely different objectives, restraints, and feels.

Sniping their Observer with what? Roaches? Well-micro'd Blink Stalkers melt anything Zerg has that can shoot up OR actually Detect the Observer.
|Zerg should really have a 300 supply limit cap (15) | Posted on May 28, 2012, 2:27 p.m.|
|The point of Zerg is to remax right after the initial engagement, harassing, macroing like crazy before a Protoss gets an 200/200 army.|
Zerg only gets to do that if the opponent never attacks. Harassment only goes so far. And when it comes to Max Supply VS Max Supply, Protoss still wins because their units are simply better and they can actually remax FASTER if they're smart enough to keep building Warp Gates once their food is maxed out.

|With perfect Micro (I mean inhumanly perfect micro), a maxed ball of Blink Stalkers would probably be 100% unstoppable. Blink is the only ability in the game that can, by itself, turn a fairly even battle into a 100% roflstomp that prevents your army from taking any damage whatsoever (if the Blink is done just before Shields run out). Combine this with Sentry Forcefields and Colossus Splash and you have an army that is nigh unapproachable.|

this is why golds shouldnt theory craft
This is why wannabe Pros need to pull the stick out of their butts. It doesn't even count as "theorycrafting" when you make comments about a unit that technically does not currently exist, or at least does not exist in the form it will exist when the game is finally released, and especially when the ability in question is unlikely to exist now or ever exist at any point in the future.

I could just picture Vipers hovering right out the back of the Mineral lines of some maps, randomly yanking enemy workers off the map whenever they got the energy to do so. It's not technically an "attack" so I don't think it would even trigger an alarm, they'd just keep losing workers and never know why.

|Mothership is actually really good support. Though, I'm not sure Blizzard wanted it to be support so much as they wanted a super unit that annihilates the battlefield.|
In it's first reveal trailer the Mothership was a gamechanger that would overshadow everything else when it hit the field. Remember the Planet Cracker from the campaign? That was one of its abilities. Also the Vortex was instead a Black Hole that never brought the units back to the field. It was considered imbalanced and beaten with the nerf stick.

|And the most ridiculous thing about this is that just defending this means you have a bunch of minerals and no gas. So wtf do you reinforce with when your army is dying? Zerglings against pure air? LOL|
Actually a crapton of Zerglings can be quite efficient if the opponent is going mass air. What are they going to stop them with, Void Rays? They just can't kill large numbers of Lings fast enough to save their tech and probe line unless you let them get like eight Carriers, a mothership, and an armada of Void Rays, and if they get that, you lost a long time ago.
And by the time they do clean up those lings, you'll have hopefully gathered up enough gas for another wave of combat units.

If someone does that it just means they tend to forget to Warp In often enough and need more gates to make up the difference. This seems gold-ish to me.
A Bronze player would have four gates on one base because they see pros do it and 3000 Minerals in the bank because they forget Warp-Ins.

|At the pro level, especially with Toss, it is so easy to see them make mistakes. Bad FFs, bad blink, bad storms, etc. The opposite is true too, sometimes you see perfect FFs. Assuming it is a race issue at that level is just stupid.|
I think that's part of the race issue though. If a Protoss loses it's because the Protoss ****ed up, if a Terran/Zerg loses against Protoss, it's probably because the Protoss DIDN'T **** up. Basically, your success against Protoss depends more on how the Protoss plays than on how you play.

Quite frankly the Queen should have always started with 50 energy. I mean seriously, "too many creep tumors"? |years later, I still dont understand why marines haven't been majorly nerfed (29) | Posted on April 25, 2012, 7:13 p.m.|
|There are a handful of units in SCII, it seems, that seem to completely outshine everything else when Micro'd well. To the extent that Micro can turn a loss or an even trade into an utter roflstomp.|
Marines are one of these. With theoretically flawless Micro, Marines are close to unstoppable. Banelings can be Kited by Stim-Marines (as can everything else, quite frankly), Infestors can be split up against to minimize Fungal effectiveness, etc. etc. etc. Quite simply, they have the potential to be all a Terran needs, if this level of Micro were actually possessed by a human player. As it is their efficiency and capabilities are limited only by the limits of human reaction time.
Blink Stalkers are similar, but Blink's cooldown and their lack of Stim-like speed makes them only slightly less incredible. They can still easily turn an even trade into a massacre though.
|ITT: Everything is OP. (18) | Posted on April 24, 2012, 6:54 p.m.|
|wait im confused now.|
you pay 300 mins for a hatch
then you pay 50 mins for a drone and you have spent total 350 mins and have 6 drones and 2 hatches
6 workers, you pay 400 for a base
then you are left with 6 workers and 2 bases and 400 mins spent
You didn't count the Larva spent to replace the Drone, and since Zerg literally cannot defend itself without Larva to spend on virtually everything, that Larva is damn valuable. It's basically a fourth resource that everything in the Zerg Tech Tree uses.
|They're making the Viper OP (47) | Posted on April 16, 2012, 8:37 p.m.|
|If it spawns constantly (i.e. 1 per second or something) the units will be mediocre due to balance reason of a low cooldown. If it's a high cooldown (1 per 3-4 seconds) the units are practically worthless in Zone Control, and very niche, but their stats will be slightly above average.|
Both give the ability for Zerg to pressure (which will range from absolutely worthless if he has enough high range units, to decent)
They still don't allow Zerg to hold ground efficiently, which is what I'm advocating.
Wow, way to make an analysis of a unit based completely on assumptions. You have no idea how the Swarm Host or its Scarabs will actually be balanced, so stop talking about how useless for space control it will clearly be.
And they did make a Lurker-like unit, the Shredder. They scrapped it because Terrans were abusing it to wipe out enemy worker-lines, apparently.
|They're making the Viper OP (30) | Posted on April 15, 2012, 8:27 p.m.|
|It doesn't make you scared of pushing forward. Only thing it'll make you scared of is if you attack and they spawn, but then, the spawn time will either be fast, or you're bad and picked a bad time to do it.|
From my understanding the Swarm Host is basically a Burrowed Brood Lord. The Brood Lord spawns units at a constant rate as long as there are enemies in range, so I don't know where you're getting that it has some sort of cooldown to wait for, unless there are factors I haven't heard about for the Swarm Host that don't apply to Brood Lords.
|update on hots!! (31) | Posted on April 15, 2012, 8:19 p.m.|
|If that's the case, why not just tweak the Carrier. So creative, Blizzard.|
Probably because the Carrier is so hard to balance. It has so many potential strengths that improving it could completely imbalance it. Each volley hits 16 times (twice per Interceptor with 8 Interceptors). Even improving their damage by 1 per shot would essentially increase their base damage by 16, which is a pretty significant difference. They'd go from 62 Damage per volley to 78 Damage per volley, as a minimum.
To put this into perspective, a Thor firing at Mutas only does 48 Damage to flying Light units in range, the Ultralisk does 35 only against Armored units, and Colossus does 30 to each unit in range.
You could improve their armor, or the number of interceptors, or any number of things, but it's a really tight balancing act and I guess they've decided it's just not worth it. Probably the best way to balance it would be to allow the Carrier to Focus Fire, as the Interceptors randomly shooting things spreads the damage out too much to efficiently bring down enemy numbers fast enough to save the Carrier, but this would seem to be rather impractical, since the Interceptors are considered uncontrollable units independent of the Carrier.
|They're making the Viper OP (28) | Posted on April 15, 2012, 8:06 p.m.|
|What does the Swarm Host do? DURR HURR I ADD MORE LINGS TO YOUR ATTACK. That's not controlling space. That's giving free Broodlings. The only "reasonable" way you can say they control space is if you don't even think of having detection.|
Because there's no possible way that infinite Zerglings spawning from a specific point could ever be used to put immense pressure on an enemy right? Even if each Scarab got in a single hit on a Bunker, that's still pressure, it's forcing the Terran to pull an SCV and constantly repair the Bunker or lose it. That's still SOMETHING, and I have no doubt people will find better uses for them than that.
And for the record, I fail to see how the same wouldn't be true of Lurkers if they were in SC II. Banshee + Scan = useless Lurkers, it's the same idea. Nothing is uncounterable, it would be stupid if it was.
|update on hots!! (27) | Posted on April 13, 2012, 3:35 p.m.|
|Really happy that they are keeping the Overssear because having the ability to make any unit a detector is unfair, they know what you are using for detection but you have no clue, meaning you can't prioritize targets. |
Are you saying it's perfectly fair that it's super-easy to pick off Zerg's only means of mobile Detection (Overseers) while Protoss Observers are invisible and Terran scans are unstoppable? The "any unit a detector" mechanic would at least give the Zerg a unique form of detection that isn't super easy to counter by accident, and even then the unit could easily be killed by accident in any given confrontation unless specifically micro'd to not die, and then you'd kind of be giving away who your Detector is.

"Here's the Shredder!"
"**** you Blizzard! What are you thinking putting in a space-controlling unit that can prevent all enemy movement in an area!? You stupid pieces of ****!"
Seriously... what the Hell? They cut the thing just because people did Shredder drops and wiped out the enemy's workers? Did they really not expect this? Should the pressure not be on the Terran's opponent to see it coming?
-Warhound will maybe get out!
That would leave Terran with a total of one new unit in the expansion? If you count the HellionBat as a new unit, anyway...
-Thinking about keeping the thor
Keeping the Thor what? As it currently is, or as the hero unit it's becoming?
-Thinking about anti air spider mines!
Because if anyone needs more anti-air it's Terrans.
We are also experimenting with an extremely long-ranged terran missile launcher that can be used to break siege tank lines to make terran-vs.-terran factory-based games more dynamic.
If only there was some weapon Terran could fire across the map to break Siege Lines? some kind of missile... a nuclear missile, perhaps?
-Replicant is out thank god
I still find it hilarious how everyone declared the Replicant useless on first reveal, then it turns out to be so OP is has to be removed.
-Tempest will be changed into an air siege unit instead of splash damage anti muta unit cause of phoenix buff
So Protoss and Zerg both get two Siege units?
-recall is still in ffs
And why shouldn't it be? You have to not use Chrono Boost to use Recall, and that in itself can put Protoss behind late-game.
Isn't this sort of the argument Terrans use to justify Scans? "But they cost energy that could have been used for mules, which puts them behind!"
-Viper gets a new spell that puts a cloak on bio units making their range -1
For clarification, it doesn't reduce their range BY one, is makes the range 1.
