|NY teacher faces discipline for notes complaining of smelly pre-K students (1) | Posted on Nov. 24, 2013, 7:52 a.m.|
A veteran kindergarten teacher in Buffalo, N.Y., is facing disciplinary action after she sent home a note with all of her students complaining that many of them are dirty and smelly, and that she doesn’t “want to touch them.”
Pre-K teacher Sharon D. Perry Dunnigan, who has taught in Buffalo public schools for almost 30 years, sent home a note titled “URGENT NOTICE!!!”
“Several children in Pre-K ages 3-4 are coming to school (sometimes daily) with soiled, stained, or dirty clothes. Some give off unpleasant smells and some appear unclean and unkempt [sic],” the note said.
“Parents please take care of this matter,” the note asked. “It is a health and safety concern. It also makes it difficult for me to be close to them or even want to touch them. Enough said.”
At the bottom of the note she asked the parent to sign and return it so she knows they have received it.
School board members in the Buffalo School District met over the incident and agreed unanimously that Dunnigan should receive more than a verbal reprimand for handling the issue so poorly.
“I was stunned to see a note that was to all parents when it was not all children in the class that are involved in the situation,” board member Mary Ruth Kapsiak told Buffalo News.
When teachers usually confront hygiene issues, they seek the help of a school nurse or social worker and speak to parents personally.
“Everybody on the board was appalled by that, everybody,” said board member James Sampson. “We’re very concerned about what this communicates to little kids and to families.”
The board discussed putting a counseling letter in her personnel file, but some board members feel Dunnigan should apologize and receive training.
However, when the school’s parent facilitator, Denise Glenn, spoke with Dunnigan the day after the letters were sent home, she rejected the suggestion that she make an apology.
“She said, ‘What do you want me to do, apologize? I’m not going to apologize because I got my point across,’” Glenn recalled.
“Sending that letter home to all parents is offensive and almost shows a contempt for the children,” said Samuel Radford, III, president of the District Parent Coordinating Council. “As opposed to judging them, condemning them, make an effort to address the underlying problem. That would be most helpful to the parent, most helpful to the student, and most helpful to the district.”
“Our schools have the support of social workers, school counselors, nurses and external support services ready to help families and lend aid to teachers,” said Will Keresztes, the district’s chief of student support. “Buffalo teachers regularly and faithfully make use of these resources to assist children and families in our district.”
Outraged by the letter, parents have questioned whether Dunnigan’s approach is indicative of a culture of insensitivity towards parents and students in the district, citing the fact that 20 percent of parents at nearby BUILD Academy have applied to transfer their kids out of the school.
“When you read this, how do you feel?” said Bryon McIntyre, vice president of the parents’ council, who alerted the district to Dunnigan’s letter. “You can’t tell me that if a teacher had written that to a parent in Williamsville, that teacher wouldn’t have been rode out of the district on a rail.”

|Sarah Adleta said her little girl was very “frightened,” but she did not step in to stop the abuse. Because of this, Jonathan Adleta told his ex-wife to find another man to have sex with their daughter so she would become used to the acts. She complied and told jurors she even performed sex acts on her children while her new boyfriend, Aaron Dixon, watched on Skype.|
That’s when the FBI was alerted and Sarah Adleta was arrested for sending the graphic images to Dixon.
Gable said in her closing argument Thursday that the last time Sarah spoke with Jonathan, they once again discussed abusing their daughter.

Jonathan Adleta reportedly dreamed of the day he could have “daddy-daughter sex” — and ultimately his dream came to fruition.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, when his then-girlfriend Sarah became pregnant with his daughter, Jonathan Adleta refused to marry her unless she allowed for him to sexually abuse their daughter.
She accepted. If she later had a son, Sarah was expected to have a sexual relationship with him, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
The couple reportedly made sex with their children “part of their parenting plan.”
On Thursday, Jonathan Adleta, 25, was convicted of two-child sex charges and faces up to life in prison. He will be sentenced in December. Sarah Adleta, 29, pled guilty in May to two charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and faces up to 30 years in prison when sentenced next month.
Prosecutors throughout the week described in explicit detail the unconscionable sexual exploitation the Adleta’s daughter and son endured from their own parents.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Gable reportedly said Jonathan Adleta had a “sexual appetite” for his own daughter.
Sarah Adleta reportedly said when they began dating, in 2008, Jonathan Adleta began showing her sexually graphic stories of fathers having sex with their daughters. She said she initially was unsure of the idea of allowing him to have sex with their child, but caved into the pressure because she was in love with him. They married him in 2010.
Jonathan Adleta, a marine who was wounded and earned the Purple Heart, was then deployed to Afghanistan. According to his LinkedIn profile, he was an Assistant Training Officer in the U.S. Marine Corps.
When Jonathan Adleta came back from his deployment, he continued to sexually exploit his kids, according to Sarah Adleta.
In 2011 the two divorced and Sarah Adleta moved away. But, despite their lack of close physical proximity, Sarah Adleta continued to allow Jonathan Adleta to abuse their daughter — through the electronic video conferencing service Skype.
In 2012, Jonathan Adleta then reportedly found a new girlfriend who also agreed to let him have sex with her daughter.
The girlfriend, Samantha Bryant, 23, not only allowed Jonathan Adleta to have sex with the child, but watched and even took pictures. At the request of Jonathan Adleta, she even performed sex acts on her own daughter.

Bryant, moreover, wrote fantasy-like stories about him having sex with her girl, after Jonathan Adleta requested it. Bryant reportedly pled guilty to sexually assaulting her own child and allowing Jonathan Adleta to exploit the little girl.
In December, Sarah Adleta said her husband visited for Christmas and again abused his own daughter. He reportedly called her into the room to watch and she did.

BOY MEETS GIRL
Look, I'll be honest: I miss the days before technology became part of my life - where I was pretty much unreachable on the road; where keeping in touch meant pulling over every couple hundred miles and placing calls from a pay phone, or actually (believe it or not) writing a card or letter from the road.
Sure, there were times when a text would have come in handy, like back in 1994, where "Lost my ear in Munich...WTF..see you in a few days" would have been very helpful.
But despite the fact that I was dragged, pretty much kicking and screaming into the brave new world of technology, I've got to admit there are times when it's very helpful, and sometimes downright amazing in it ability to allow friends to find each other through social media. I really enjoy those interactions that strike viewers as unlikely, where alternate entertainment universes seem to collide - where an interaction seems to figuratively blow people's minds, and make them say "how the heck do they know each other"
Well, in my history of mind-blowing interactions, none strikes people as odder, or cuter than my friendship with Danielle Fishel. Yeah, you hear me - I'm friends with Topanga!
How is this possible, you might ask. Well, back in 1999, I was a guest star on "Boy Meets World", in a little classic episode called "For Love and Apartments". I enjoyed myself thoroughly on the show, was made to feel very much at home, and even exchanged numbers with Danielle - having no idea of the cultural significance of a phone call from Topanga, who a good portion of American teenagers had a major crush on. So, I kept in touch for a couple years, got her tickets to WWE events in LA a couple times...and then time just kind of marched on, phone numbers changed, lives went different directions, and Daniel and I lost touch.
Until Twitter lent a helping hand! A considerate Foley follower was kind enough to point out a tweet from Danielle where she mentioned that my guest appearance in 1999 was one of the ones the cast enjoyed most. I sent her a message thanking her, she sent one back, and BAM! - just like that, for the past three years, this unlikely friendship has been making thousands of people simultaneously go "awww" every time we interact.
After all these years - 14 of them, I finally got a chance to see Danielle again, on the set of her new show "Girl Meets World". As you can see from the photo, she looks amazing - like time just stopped in 1999 and left her looking exactly the way you knew and loved her. She could not have been nicer or more generous with her time, made me and two friends feel like we were the most important people in the world, and as I walked away from the set, I completely "got" why half the American teen population had their first crush on Topanga. Check out her new show, "Girl Meets World", premiering soon - you'll fall in love all over again.

|San Rafael, Calif. passes ban that makes it illegal to smoke in own house....... (1) | Posted on Nov. 23, 2013, 8:20 a.m.|
|...if walls are shared with another dwelling|
Before anyone lights a cigarette in San Rafael, Calif., they should make sure they know the law as the town has passed a ban on smoking that city officials tout as the toughest in the country.
ABC News reports that the California town’s new ordinance makes it illegal for residents to smoke in their own homes if they share a wall with another dwelling. The ban applies to owners and renters alike, and it covers condominiums, co-ops, apartments and any multi-family residence containing three or more units.
“We are happy to blaze a trail,” Mayor Gary Phillips said before the vote, according to Mail Online. “We're most happy to be in the forefront of the issue because we think it will greatly benefit our residents and those visiting San Rafael, and we think it will set the tone for other cities as well.”
The ordinance also made it illegal to smoke outside in downtown San Rafael unless the smoker is “actively passing” on their way somewhere else.
"We based it on a county ordinance, but we modified it, and ended up making it the strictest. I'm not aware of any ordinance that's stronger," Rebecca Woodbury, an analyst at the San Rafael City Manager's office, told ABC News.
The ban in San Rafael went into effect on Nov. 14.
Earlier this year, the Related Companies became the first developer and property owner to ban smoking in all 40,000 of its rental residences in 17 states.
A spokesperson for Related noted the popularity of the ban.
"There are more people who want to live in smoke-free environments than there are apartments available. Demand far exceeds supply."
