"Michael, I told you, it was because it was New Year's Eve and it began to snow at exactly midnight!"
"Oh, Bruce Willis! Are they going to leave him on the asteroid?!"
Steve Buscemi and the score are the only good things about it.

Grade: A+, one of the best movies of the 90s and one of my favorite films. An intriguing and prophetic story, wonderful performances anchored by one of the best Everyman performances in Carrey (the Best Actor statue belonged here), wickedly clever and funny at times, heartfelt and sad at others, beautiful soundtrack, easily rewatchable...it has it all. Great entertainment all the way.

It's bad enough that it's as lame as Meet the Foockers, but then they added Jessica Alba to the mix, which is basically a big white flag proclaiming how awful your movie is. Every time she came on, I had an urge to do something else, anything else. Most of the movie actually kinda made me feel the same way. Hope those checks cleared for Stiller and De Niro.
|Rate: Gettysburg and Gods & Generals. (4) | Posted on June 8, 2012, 4:53 p.m.|
Gettysburg is really, really good....
G&G, not so much. A lot less interesting and feels really rote and cliched. Unlike Gettysburg, which held my attention pretty well considering the Civil War is not exactly source material that enthralls me, G&G just feels like it takes Sandlot FOOOORRRR EHHHH VER to finish. I think Gettysburg was able to do a great job because its scope was so narrow, while G&G tries to juggle so many things that it doesn't do much of them justice.

^It's weird seeing Thora Birch as a little kid since she would grow up to have that fantastic rack in American Beauty just a few years later.
Both movies suck, but I admire the gall of Blank Check to have a pedophile 30-year-old love interest for a 11-year-old, so that one just for its big, massive huevos. Just imagine the backlash had it been a 30-year-old male planting a multi-second liplock on a little girl.

Except for the fact I don't. I think it's an excellent series as a whole and I think ROTK is an damn great movie. Do I think they're not among the best movies ever? Yes. Do I think it's not the best trilogy ever? Yes. Do I think they can be overrated? Yes. Do I think Lost in Translation or American Splendor deserved Best Picture over ROTK? Yes. Do I find the characters as basic archetypes and the pacing of the first two films all over the place? Yes. Do I think ROTK did not need more fake endings than Clue? Yes. If I was going to an island for the rest of my life, would I take Harry Potter over LOTR? Yes. Does that mean I still don't enjoy the sheer epic scope, imaginative visuals, good performances, and thrilling action? Not at all, because I do.
