|I like York Shin. What's so cool about it, IMO, is how it's a major arc and yet none of the main characters get a fight in the traditional sense. And it's great. Screw formulas.|

Think he's pointing out that most of the canon arcs in Fairy Tail have done little to nothing for the overall plot.
What overall plot?

|Japanese perception of America using "Engrish" (29) | Posted on Sept. 22, 2011, 1:32 a.m.|
Um.. you people clearly don't watch American television or cinema. When we have a native Japanese character speaking Japanese, we have a native speaking Japanese person speaking Japanese (who actually knows Japanese).
What, you mean like that guy Hiro from Heroes? 2ch was nuts about how he was Chinese, he didn't even look Japanese, and he certainly didn't have a Japanese accent.
Another great example from American television is in HIMYM, when they bring in the architect group SVEN, a group that's supposed to be full of Swedish stereotypes. They speak with German accents, are typically German, and have practically nothing that would hint at their being Swedish at all. There are many examples of Americans being cheap, or of Americans having no idea that Europe isn't a country.
|Compiling a list of 20 classics to read over the next few years..would like help (18) | Posted on Sept. 20, 2011, 12:21 p.m.|
Are those books "must reads" because they're good, or because they're traditionally considered "must reads?" How many of those authors are non-white/female? How many are British?
These are pretty important questions, and the answers are hugely political. I don't like the term "classic literature," and I'm not too fond of what is called "the western canon." In terms of cultural capital, the books listed might be helpful--- you can name drop at a cocktail party and act smug. And many of them are very good. But they're hardly the only good books from their time period, and anyone with more than a passing interest in literature would be able to easily identify any number of alternative books that aren't privileged just for being privileged.
TC, I definitely recommend Hemingway. He really is great IMO. Orwell's books are well worth the read. You should also try The Blindness by José Saramago. It's a bit more of a "modern classic", but Saramago is amazing.
Also, Kallocain by Karin Boye. A ma zing. You'll find it readable for free online and probably quite cheap other places. It's really, really good.
|Bleach Bankai **POSSIBLE SPOILERS** (13) | Posted on Sept. 20, 2011, 11:31 a.m.|
why are we talking about lieutenant bankais they aren't even supposed to have them, we should be speculating on Shunsui, Ukitake, and the other captains!
Bankai is a prerequisite for being captain (except Kenpachi's division) does not imply that only captains have bankai. What kind of backwards-logic is that?

|Fairy Tail and fanservice (44) | Posted on Sept. 19, 2011, 2:51 p.m.|
Then we know what you consider "realistic human proportions" and if you say something that Fairy Tail clearly can't match then we'll understand.
Why, because I would have to refer to manga to explain what "normal human proportions" look like? That seems like an awfully roundabout way to go about it in the first place.
|Fairy Tail and fanservice (40) | Posted on Sept. 19, 2011, 2:16 p.m.|
NearER is what everyone's trying to get at.
FT's proportions generally look at least possible.
OP thins and lengthens legs, waists, necks and arms to ridiculous amounts. This doesn't always make them look unattractive, mind you(Robin pretty **** sexy), but by and large they look more inhuman than the FT crowd.
And I'm just saying that both look completely unbelievable. Meaning, that IMO the difference (while palpable) is marginal.
|Fairy Tail and fanservice (38) | Posted on Sept. 19, 2011, 2:13 p.m.|
point out a manga you consider to have "normal human proportions" then please and we'll start the comparisons.
Why? That seems completely irrelevant. I'm talking about Fairy Tail.
|Fairy Tail and fanservice (36) | Posted on Sept. 19, 2011, 1:59 p.m.|
typical OP fan in denial
I don't even deny that OP figures are far away from normal human proportions. I'm just trying to introduce the notion that OT does not seem to fathom what "normal human proportions" implies. FT girls are not near them.
|Fairy Tail and fanservice (30) | Posted on Sept. 18, 2011, 10:36 p.m.|
No, the body proportions in Fairy Tail definitely run closer to normal human than the ones in One Piece. The thing with the female waist is just one example. Other include some absurd heights, such as Brook being nearly 9 feet tall, the Admirals being notably taller than him, Doflamingo being 10 feet, and Blackbeard being just over 10 feet tall. To say nothing of Moria and Kuma who are over 20 feet tall. Pretty much all of whom are normal humans. Then there are the heads, Ivankov for example, has a huge head, or how about this sister of Hancock's:
Of course, in my comparison I didn't include the obvious goofs, rather just the women that are supposed to be "hot". (and to be fair, Moria and Kuma don't seem to be normal humans, but never mind that)
Sure, the waists in OP are very thin, I agree. The body proportions on the girls in FT does, however, not run much closer to "normal human proportions".
It's also not a matter of skill, it's a matter of design choice.
This I definitely agree with.

The point wasn't to say that hentai was feces, it was to illustrate that one might not like both, just because one likes one porn more than hentai. Maybe I should've just said that not everyone likes both hamburger and steak, but you know, I honestly felt I wasn't being too cryptic in my hyperbole. Here's to being wrong, I guess.

|What does OT think of Monster? (55) | Posted on Sept. 18, 2011, 11:03 a.m.|
You're mostly right on the first part but... why did you even get into this argument if you haven't even seen or read Monster? It seems doubly pointless on your end since you have no involvement with it.
Because the topic was "What does OT think of Monster?", not "What do you think of Monster?". I thought I had a vague grasp of what OT does think of Monster, and this topic proves I wasn't completely right, but quite close. It seems to be a very well liked series, I just didn't expect the vocal minority to be as major as it is.
Then someone came and made these incredibly stupid assumptions such as "I'm blind" and "I don't have an opinion". That's just slander. I just couldn't sit still and take it.
|Fairy Tail and fanservice (25) | Posted on Sept. 18, 2011, 10:59 a.m.|
you seem to be the first to use that word.
nobody said REALISTIC. 3D = PD.
Mashima makes them look GOOD.
Well, the post I was responding to was
Body proportions primarily. Mashima's run much closer to normal human proportions. Oda's on the other hand are all over the place.
and the likes. Now, you might want to argue that he didn't use the word "realistic", but I feel that "running much closer to normal human proportions" is about the same thing. Maybe not exactly, but close enough. You can nitpick if you want, but now you know what I meant. Sometimes it's better to read the posts rather than just ctrl+Fing a word.

Uh, don't let such simple things offend you. Don't forget that you're on an internet board. Do you really think anyone cares at all if you tell them that you're never taking them seriously again? Would you care at all if someone who doesn't know you suddenly told you "I'm never listening to your opinions again"? >_>
Frankly, my reason for calling you blind is because there's always multiple negative posts in each Monster topic. Why I know this? Because I'm the one making sure it happens.
So what you're telling me is that you were in fact the offended one since I apparently haven't noticed your multiple negative posts? I suppose that either they weren't multiple enough, or just that I haven't seen a Monster topic in a while, because I can't seem to recall you at all. I just know that Monster is generally very well regarded here, with the only criticism I've really noted before this topic being that the anime is a bit drawn-out.
Oh, and in case you haven't figured it out yet:
I'm not blind (in fact, my eyesight is pretty outstanding).
|I would watch Steins Gate if only (22) | Posted on Sept. 18, 2011, 3:54 a.m.|
We... don't know yet. They're definitely related to the series, but seeing as neither will be out until next year at the least no-one can say for sure. In any case, they'll just add details/alternate routes/FUN TIMES seeing as the plot's fully wrapped up.
Aha, I didn't think so far as to check the release dates. Also, I noticed there were loads of different mangas. Did the anime cover the entire manga, or are they, as well, alternate routes or "filler"?
|Fairy Tail and fanservice (15) | Posted on Sept. 18, 2011, 3:52 a.m.|
|I think it's primarily because Fairy Tail isn't as popular. It's one of those series that OT seems to really like right now.|
I just can't fathom people thinking that the body proportions in FT are more realistic than the ones in OP. Both are equally ridiculous. Now, if you just happen to think Mashima's art looks better, that's another thing.
Personally I prefer OP's "fan service". I read once, somewhere, that Oda got some complaints about Nami having too thin a waist and too big breasts. In response he made her thinner with bigger breasts. I totally like that. I just get the impression that the fan service in OP is more of a parody than anything else, where Mashima, on the other hand, seems to take it a little too seriously.

Also another piece of info i read - this is only the half way point of the series.
Oda has been saying that for a while, now, so nobody really knows for sure. The speculation goes something like "since they've come halfway across the world, they have one half left" which seems fairly straightforward. We'll see, though, if Oda makes his arcs longer and longer or mixes in some shorter arcs as well. So far, the latter seems plausible.

|(haven't seen the first series, I'm talking about Brotherhood)|
I don't know, it's an okay action shounen in my eyes. Nothing amazing, but definitely one or two measures above endless productions like Bleach, Naruto and One Piece (their anime versions, I'm not going to go into some big three debate, here). Quite short, nice pace, extremely nice visuals, and lots of action. It's a solid shounen recommend, for me.
Back to Steins;Gate, I checked it out on anidb. Being in the category Dating Sim - Visual Novel really really turns me off, but the story seems quite interesting. I'll still give it a shot, but I'm not as psyched now.
|What does OT think of Monster? (31) | Posted on Sept. 18, 2011, 2:01 a.m.|
Then you're blind.
Isn't that quite a stupid assumption? I mean, for one, I'm on a text-based message board. Sure, blind people can surf the web, too, but it's much more of a hassle. Second, the board is about anime and manga, medias that are taken in by sight. Blind people are going to have a lot bigger problems with that. Third, while not being the most productive OTter, I'm still a regular here, and every once in a while I acknowledge that I've seen/read something.
I mean, telling me I'm blind like that is almost insultingly stupid. How am I ever supposed to take you seriously ever again?
|I would watch Steins Gate if only (12) | Posted on Sept. 18, 2011, 1:53 a.m.|

|Your top 5 most overrated anime ever!!!(iyo of course) (4) | Posted on Sept. 17, 2011, 11:52 p.m.|
|Out of the ones I've seen, these come to mind:|
A bunch of really tiresome anime cliches executed poorly. On top of that there's the intriguing plot twists that basically boil down to "What??? They have a new mech model?" back and forth. It's overrated because it's a mediocre series that people think is number one.
FF VII: Advent Children (if it counts, that is)
This is the most horrible crap fan service ever. I don't really see it as anime, but it's on MAL, so other people do. It's overrated simply because it sucks and not everyone agrees.
Hajime no Ippo
I really like the Hajime no Ippo anime. It has great animation and pacing. The problem is that it cut out a lot of stuff happening in-between fights. Those are the best parts in Ippo, IMO, so it was a big disappointment in some respects. It's overrated because everyone keeps raising it to the sky, when it's actually just good.
I really like Rurouni Kenshin. The anime does not do the manga justice. They botch the first few arcs, and then comes the Kyoto arc. Most people on OT agree that it's splendid. I don't. I quickly grew tired of hearing Aoshi repeat the names of his comrades over and over and over and over. On top of that, the anime hasn't aged well. The animation quality overall isn't really exciting. It's overrated because people raise it to the sky and can't see that it didn't age well.
|Why are Philip K. Dick books so expensive? (11) | Posted on Sept. 17, 2011, 1:57 p.m.|
|The point is that trade paperbacks are made with higher quality components. They cost more to make. Mass market paperbacks are made to be cheap. That's why there's a price difference. That's a fact, so I don't really understand what you're trying to argue.|
|How do you like your villains? A discussion topic. (73) | Posted on Sept. 17, 2011, 1:01 p.m.|

|How do you like your villains? A discussion topic. (70) | Posted on Sept. 17, 2011, 12:03 p.m.|
|In my book, Hisoka is among the best villains ever. I can't believe no one has mentioned him yet. Another really really great villain, for other reasons, is Maleficent. While Hisoka is interesting, creepy, and completely unpredictable, Maleficent is just hella scary.|
One thing I don't like is when villains kill their subordinates just to show how evil they are. It also makes them look incompetent and stupid.
