But in response to Wally's point. How would such a program work if it provided subsidies or some kind of public housing program to people who fall under a certain income level?
What would be the benefits and downsides to a "Affordable Housing Act" structured in the same way as the "Affordable Healthcare Act"?
Because it seems to me that using the individual mandate to encourage people to get housing isn't much different from using one to encourage people to buy insurance.
|Poll: Does religion cause more violence or peace? (37) | Posted on July 8, 2012, 1:35 p.m.|
I can't think of a single instance where religion caused "peace". I can, however, point to ENDLESS examples of how it causes/cauded strife, violence, and war.
Most of the Abolitionists in the United States were highly religious and based their views on the evils of slavery on the Bible.
Religion doesn't cause violence in and of it self. Violent people just use it as an excuse to cause a war.
|Let's discuss how the individual mandate can end homelessness. (4) | Posted on July 8, 2012, 1:32 p.m.|
People who cannot afford coverage under the healthcare plan are not forced to pay full price for it, and are instead either included in medicaid or have it subsidized to make it easier for them.
I understand that. This isn't about the mandate as it applies to healthcare per say as its what other ways it could be applied. Housing mandate to end homelessness seems like one of the most obvious.
|Let's discuss how the individual mandate can end homelessness. (1) | Posted on July 8, 2012, 1:26 p.m.|

scigeek101 posted...I still think its around 50% but its hard to say. Romney may have gained a slight edge in light of Health Care rulings.
More along the lines of of Obamacare being very unpopular and many voters want to get rid of it. Romney will capitalize on this since he has promised to repeal it on day 1 if possible.
So now, people who don't like the healthcare bill who want it repealed will have to vote for Romney, if anything I think it has galvanized the republican base and you will see less protest votes for a 3rd candidate from Republicans.
If everybody's number 1 issue was Healthcare, Romney would win. When you start adding other issues such as the economy, I believe that many voters will vote Romney in the coming election.
Let's also try to remember that most of us on this board are in social circles that are most likely largely Liberal, so our perspective on the chances of reelection will be skewed. I think that when you factor in retired people, and more conservative areas of the center portions of our country, we will probably have a very close election. Especially in areas like Florida.
Truthfully the largest margin I can see Obama winning by is about 60%. But I think the election will probably have margins more like 53% or less.

I don't get BBT topics, as they always seem to pose questions that have EXTREMELY obvious answers. Are you debating conservaderps, or what? Because in this case, the only objective and correct answer is what Jimayo said. End of story.
BBT is a troll and gets his kicks out of flaming conservatives.
The answer isn't quite at obvious as one would think though. If the government starts coming in and telling doctors that they have to perform certain treatments, that just really opens the door for more lobbying corruption.
What if a big medical corporation makes am addictive medication that many doctors think is damaging, so they refuse to administer it. What's to stop the corporation from lobbying the government to mandate that doctors must administer it if requested?

|A religious hospital should be able to decide what treatments they want to provide. No doctor should be forced to provide a treatment that he doesn't agree with, whether that is opposing a lobotomy for scientific reason or opposing recreational abortion, no doctor should be forced to compromise his morals. |
Obviously though there are certain reasonable limits to this. A Jehova's Witness shouldn't apply for a job as somebody who deals in blood transfusions. And if one does than not performing the requirements of the job should be grounds for dismissal. Same for somebody who woks at an abortion clinic. But a doctor at a general hospital who usually performs other tasks should not be dismissed for refusing to perform the occasional abortion. Especially if there are other doctors in the same hospital capable of doing it.
Example: If a rape victim comes to a general hospital wanting an abortion, Dr. Smith should not be fired for saying "I don't perform abortions as a matter of conscience, I will defer your case to Dr. Jones who does perform abortions."
Also, how does not believing in evolution be used as a grounds for opposition to immunizations?
